Literature: Over one thousand titles and 700 new books in Havana’s book fair
Havana´s 2003 International Book Fair (FILH), to be held between January 30 and February 9, will present five million books printed in Cuba, 700 new publications and over one thousand titles.
Havana´s 2003 International Book Fair (FILH), to be held between January 30 and February 9, will present five million books printed in Cuba, 700 new publications and over one thousand titles.
In press statements, Cuban Book Institute (ICL) President Iroel Sanchez said that FILH will be hosted by 30 local cities (11 more than in 2002).
To honor Cuban poet Pablo Armando Fernández, participants from Bolivia, Colombia, Ecuador, Peru and Venezuela will show the best of their literature, music and fine arts.
Called by organizers "a pole of intellectual attraction", the event -to extend across the Caribbean island until March- will include the sale of books that were sold out last year, the so-called minibooks and universal literature books.
As a very precious gift, readers will enjoy works from Cuban National Poet Jose Marti, whose 150th anniversary is celebrated in 2003.
According to organizers, Cuba will exhibit "as world exclusivity" the memoirs from Jorge Enrique Adoum, one of the most important Ecuadorian writers, who gave up his royalties to publish his book "De cerca y de memoria" (Close and By Heart).
Among the greatest new editions of the fair are the book collection "Una mirada a los Estados Unidos" (A Look at the US), by Cuban New Millenium publishing house and others by contemporary Latin American authors from Casa de las Americas.
Included in the event are an academic program of roundtables, debates by prominent intellectuals on new technologies, culture, education, sport ands science and technology.
The guest nations will present an important photographic exhibition dedicated to Literature Nobel Laureate, Colombian Gabriel Garcia Marquez, and fine art works by Ecuadorian painter Oswaldo Guayasamin.
Many authors, writers, librarians and publishing houses from Europe and Latin America are expected to participate. With the slogan "Reading is Growing", the coming fair will be held at the old Fortaleza de San Carlos de la Cabaña, where outstanding musicians from Cuba and the visiting nations will perform to close every day of the event.
